If you were to give an end of the year music award to the city most responsible for the overall sound of hip-hop in 2021, it would have to be Detroit, MI. Despite which part of the country you reign from, it seems like everyone wants a piece of the Detroit sound, and making it their own. An artist who has been successful with putting his own twist to the adopted Detroit sound is YS.
The Compton, California native has been on the rise these last couple of years. With his projects Street Dreams & Cold Hearted, as well as his joint project with RonRonTheProducer Street Icons, YS has made a legitimate name for himself in this Los Angeles scene.
YS looks to continue his momentum by releasing his latest single from his forthcoming 'Realer Than Real', which is executive producer prentirely by platinum Detroit Producer, Helluva. The beatmaker has previously worked with the likes of Akon, Megan Thee Stallion, Yo Gotti and Tee Grizzley.
On "Cannon", Helluva intertwines his Detroit roots with the Los Angeles sound by sampling Zapp & Roger's classic track "More Bounce" which is a match made in heaven for an artist such as YS. YS brings his trademark high energy flow to the track to make you feel like you've been transported into the back seat of a lowrider riding down Rosecrans Avenue in Compton with the sound system blaring.
To go along with the release of the single, the pair also dropped the Hyperview Films directed visual. The music video puts the audience into the middle of Campanella Park in Compton as YS and his posse, which happen to include popular Detroit rapper Sada Baby amongst others. With tons of momentum from his onslaught of quality singles, YS will continue to release singles until 'Realer Than Real' is released next month.
