This week, the enigmatic Highway finally dropped the video for one of his numerous fan-favorite tracks, “Better Float” - a clear standout song off his impressive ‘Count Fast Untitled’ EP released last year and a perfect example of the massive potential behind one of the game’s best-kept secrets.
From the first bass hit, it’s clear that “Better Float” isn’t your typical song. It immediately reels you in with its captivating, haunting production and massive punching bass - driven home by Highway’s intense delivery and raspy, melodic flow that perfectly glides over the unique arrangement (produced by Xjay) as he contemplates the implications of his high-flying lifestyle. While there are moments when Highway feels familiar - almost like a more introspective Future - his sound, energy, and overall demeanor create a hugely compelling package that manages the difficult task of being both fresh and familiar at the same time.
Just like the song, the black-and-white music video for “Better Float” is simple but powerful. Produced by the quickly ascending creative studio, EVRYWHRE & NOWHRE, the visual shows Highway walking by himself in what looks like the Hollywood hills, delivering his magnetic bars in between crisp edits and subtle visual effects - creating a hugely engaging video despite the lack of the usual bells and whistles.
Highway is truly a hidden gem with all the skills, swag, and infrastructure to be a major artist in no time. Over the last year, he’s quietly put out multiple high-quality projects displaying different sides of his impressive and well-developed signature style. Before dropping “Count Fast Untitled” in August (with songs like “Better Float”, “Motion”, and “Get Paid”) he released ‘The Way’, an album (very notably) executive produced by platinum super-producer Jetsonmade containing tracks like “Go Home”, “Cheesecake”, and “Fight Them Drugs” - not to mention Highway’s biggest song to date, “Another Plane” featuring Jetsonmade. Also in the last year, he dropped several fire singles, most notably “Count Fast Island” (building upon his “Count Fast” brand) and “Get It Quick” - an uncharacteristically groovy, upbeat banger to prove that he can ‘do both’ and shows just how dangerous he will be going forward.
Overall, Highway is a major force to be reckoned with in 2022 - and no better way to kick off the year than a striking visual for one of his most compelling and defining tracks to date, “Better Float”.
