Icewear Vezzo ‘Rich Off Pints 2’

by Aidan C Werder on September 29, 2021

On Wednesday, Detroit’s Icewear Vezzo dropped off his new album, ‘Rich Off Pints 2’, a scorcher of a project showcasing his gritty Detroit sound - stamping his status not only as a frontrunner of the bubbling Michigan rap scene, but as one of the most exciting, independent acts to break into the mainstream in 2021.

‘Rich Off Pints 2’ is the Icewear Vezzo project and follow up to volume 1 we needed - fueling the fire to feed the demand after an absolutely red-hot year. The new project gives listeners a full sampling of the hugely compelling style of unapologetic, unmistakably-Detroit music that got him to where he is today - as well as a glimpse at some new sounds and his continuing evolution. With features from Future, Moneybagg Yo, Babyface Ray, Ant Beatz, RMR, and Rio Da Yung OG - ‘Rich Off Pints 2’ is the perfect way to introduce the acquired taste of Michigan rap to a wider audience.

Tracks like “Mudd Baby”, “Never Had A Handout”, and “Ghetto Ice” featuring the local legend and currently incarcerated Rio Da Yung OG (one of the pioneers of the Flint, Michigan scene) are perfect examples of the raw sound, unorthodox cadence, distinct production, and gritty, no-holds-barred subject matter representative of the Michigan style as a whole. “Chamber Brothers”, released earlier this month, is another prime example. There’s also “Sippin” feat. Babyface Ray - likely an early standout off the project featuring another undeniable frontrunner out of the same Detroit neighborhood as Vezzo.

It also must be acknowledged that there is not one but two features from the ungettable Future on ‘Rich Off Pints 2’. “Tear The Club Up”, released as a single in June, is another instant-classic, repurposing the iconic Three6 Mafia slogan into an ominous, club banger dripping with Detroit swag. With the release of the project, we were treated to a second appearance from Pluto on “Everyday” - a more uptempo, trap-inspired track than we’d usually expect from Vezzo, with a killer hook and opening verse from Future.

There are also a few tracks on the project where we get a glimpse at Vezzo outside his natural habitat of Detroit-heavy production - most notably on “Hustle Hard” featuring the enigmatic, ski mask wearing gangster-rap-singer, RMR. The somber, piano-led instrumental sets the stage for a beautifully sung, soulful chorus before giving way to a killer, introspective verse from Vezzo. The whole thing is pretty unexpected from the gritty Detroit gang star - however perfectly paired, brilliantly executed, and surely one of the standout tracks from the project. Another unexpected moment was “5 Mill” - a flip of the iconic “Five On It” beat with almost no signature Detroit sounds in sight - paving the way for a dope, uncharacteristically straightforward verse.

Icewear Vezzo has been having one hell of a year. In May, dropping the instant street classic  “Up the Sco” feat. Lil Durk (now with over 13M views) before dropping the first volume of ‘Rich Off Pints’ - featuring tracks like “Venting” “Choppy Talk” and “Jack Artist” feat. Rio Da Yung Og as well as other big name features from EST Gee, Big30, Peezy, GT, Trippie Redd, Lil Yachty, and more. From there, in the lead up to ‘Rich Off Pints 2’ he drops “Tear the Club Up” feat. Future followed by “Know The Difference” feat. Lil Baby - an absolute monster of a track showing that Vezzo can hold his own with the best of them. The frenzy of activity and attention from many of the biggest names in the game has definitely been catching eyes and ears around the industry - making stops at everywhere from The Breakfast Club, Say Cheese, DJVlad, REVOLT, and more in the leadup to the ‘Rich Off Pints 2’.

For the uninitiated, Icewear Vezzo is a longtime veteran of the increasingly popular Detroit / Michigan rap scene - a regional style that’s come to be known for its “offbeat” cadence, unique production, gritty tone, and shock value lyrics. In recent years, Vezzo has undeniably separated himself from the pack as one of the scene’s rising stars - thanks largely to his distinct, gritty style and unique take on the Detroit sound. Digging through his extensive catalog you’ll find collabs with just about every notable artist out of Michigan: Rio Da Yung OG, Babyface Ray, GT, Louie Ray, YN Jay, Peezy, Veeze, KrispyLife Kidd, and the list goes on. After a series of ups and downs - from building an independent buzz, to getting locked up, to signing a historic label deal that made him the first Detroit rapper signed to the iconic Motown Records - Vezzo is now back independent under his own Iced Up Records… and truly sounding better and hungrier than ever.

His latest project, ‘Rich Off Pints 2’ is a testament to Vezzo’s unique talent and years in the game - proof that perseverance combined with a unique perspective and original & compelling sound is the recipe for an authentic superstar that resonates with both the streets and the masses.
