Last week, seasoned Long Beach veteran, Joey Fatts, dropped a brand-new single, “Bright Lights” featuring Allyn in anticipation of his upcoming new project ‘Quiccsand’ set to drop later this month.
Joey Fatts is a longtime staple of the Long Beach community known for his classic west coast swag and notable appreciation for the underground - with deep ties to new school west coast legends like Tyler the Creator and cousin, Vince Staples as well as other young goats like Mac Miller, the A$AP MOB, and Playboi Carti. With “Bright Lights”, we see this juxtaposition in full effect - combining his unmistakable LA cadence with a confident monotone delivery and eerie synth-production (by 4ThaThr33) that evokes strong memories of a Goblin-era Tyler. When seperate these are familiar sounds, but together create a hugely compelling new vibe that combines the hard edge of Los Angeles street culture with the more artsy, stylized approach of the underground.
The video for “Bright Lights” (directed by KikysVision) perfectly mirrors the song’s combination of styles - taking a classic LA scene of a backyard cookout, presumably in honor of a lost loved one, and matter-of-factly mixing in surreal images like Fatts mounted on a jet black horse in the middle of Long Beach or delivering his bars from a surfboard in the middle of the pool. As if his performance weren’t enough on its own, his verses are expertly broken up by a tightly executed hook and silky-smooth vocals from Allyn - joining Joey and his horse for the square-frame, lo-fi visual.
In the music video, we also get a glimpse at Joey Fatts the entrepreneur and community leader - working to provide a positive influence in his home neighborhood with his brand and retail store, Cutthroat, located on 1st Street in Long Beach.
Overall, “Bright Lights” is a hugely successful track that accomplishes the impossible task of being chill, hard, familiar, and fresh all at the same time. If this is anything like what we can expect to hear on his upcoming project, ‘Quiccsand’, 2022 is shaping up to be a big year for Joey Fatts.
