Last week Joyce Wrice dropped the video for her killer collab with Freddie Gibbs, an infectious nostalgia-inducing track called “On One.”
“On One” is an upbeat, lighthearted R&B-leaning track that evokes 90s and early 00s, summer-cookout vibes. Joyce’s silky vocals and undeniable charisma would be plenty on their own, but add in the contrast of Freddie Gibb’s deep vocal and effortless bars and Joyce has got herself a bona fide R&B bop.
The upbeat, feel-good vibe and throwback production combined with the video’s tightly choreographed dance moves (courtesy of Brian Drake), killer braids, and nostalgic rapper/R&B singer chemistry between Joyce and Gibbs - all come together to make this the perfect throwback-thursday-kickback song as the spring approaches. The music video director, Yavez Anthonio, did a great job of capturing the essence of the track and evoking that feel-good, throwback feeling the song needs.
For the uninitiated, Joyce Wrice is a talented, independent singer and artist from the West Coast with an amazing voice and a super interesting hybrid sound that blends the best parts of R&B, hip hop, and pop to create a hugely listenable style with broad, radio-ready appeal.
After putting in work over the years - releasing multiple EPs, touring overseas in the UK, Australia, and Japan, and having appeared on tracks alongside big names like The Free Nationals, Amine, Ivan Ave, Wale, and Griselda’s Westside Gunn and Conway the Machine - it looks now might finally be Joyce’s time in the spotlight with her new album, Overgrown, out this month.
The new project features an incredibly impressive lineup of features for an indie singer like Joyce, with features from heavy hitter like KAYTRANADA, Westside Gunn, Masego, Devin Morrison, and of course, the Grammy-nominated Freddie Gibbs.
If “On One” is anything close to what we can expect from the rest of Overgrown, we are in for a treat. Listeners should expect groovy production, stellar vocals, and that hint of hip hop Joyce is quickly becoming known for.
