Last week, Mozzy and Shordie Shordie teamed up for the second time on the hard-hitting west-coast collab, “Tell the Truth”. Fresh off his big move to CMG, Mozzy sounds in peak from on “Tell the Truth” - one of his first releases since signing to Yo Gotti’s emerging powerhouse alongside EST Gee, 42 Dugg, and Moneybagg Yo.
Shordie’s signature vocal and the booming, unmistakably west coast beat (produced by Ace Souja, Daveo & TariqBeats) perfectly set the stage for Mozzy’s intricate flow patterns and gritty streets bars to paint vivid pictures of poverty, hardship, and harsh politics - pulling no punches as he flexes his hard-earned big dog status while walking the streets of his home turf of Oak Park, Sacramento. Even while incredibly catchy, Shordie’s melodic hook is just as devious and densely packed as Mozzy’s notoriously slick-talking verses.
The Suzy-directed video for “Tell the Truth” is sprinkled with tightly-executed edits and shows a healthy-looking, fully dreadlocked Mozzy bringing Shordie to a few local landmarks around Oak Park, accompanied by a Mozzy-merch-wearing entourage.
This pair last connected on Mozzy’s 2020 album, Beyond Bulletproof - another well-matched collab and a standout from the project. Since then Mozzy has only grown, earning his highest-charting debut last year with Untreated Trauma, releasing a well-received joint project with YG, and announcing his exciting move to CMG earlier this year in February.
Overall, “Tell the Truth” is everything fans would have hoped from this collab - and probably the first release since the CMG announcement that truly scratches the itch for a classic Mozzy verse.
