On Wednesday, YouTube Music’s #1 artist, NBA Youngboy dropped a surprising new track titled, “Emo Rockstar” while under house arrest in Utah - showing off an unexpectedly vulnerable side in contrast to his normally rough exterior with a downbeat melodic flow, guitar-led production, and very notably rocking a brand new face paint look… that is apparently sticking around no matter how these people feel about it.
With over 1M views in under 12 hours on YouTube, it’s clear that Youngboy’s first step in the ‘rap rockstar’ direction has not gone unnoticed - mostly due to the striking image of YB’s face painted with makeup. While there certainly have been mixed reviews, the response from YB’s rabid core fanbase is overwhelmingly positive and the video currently stands at over 200K likes on 2M views… an unusually high like-ratio that’s hard to ignore. It is definitely refreshing to see such a young and influential, gritty street-oriented artist from the South show some vulnerability and get more in touch with their emotional side - especially considering the difficult situation he finds himself in currently.
The video for “Emo Rockstar” (directed by FlyGuyNick) was clearly shot within the four walls of the house YB is confined to somewhere in Utah as his various cases play out in court - mostly taking place at the impromptu rock band set up in the garage as he’s joined by his apparent right hand man and producer, Jason “Cheese” Golberg on the drums.
Overall, Youngboy appears to be making the best of a bad situation as he continues to release and record new music at the same pace and quality that made him one of the top streaming artists in the world - including the ‘From the Bayou’ joint-project with Birdman earlier this month and the #1 album ‘Sincerely, Kentrell’ released in October. Given the massive reception to these recent releases and the already huge hype surrounding “Emo Rockstar”, despite all the behind-the-scenes drama YB doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
