Rick Ross “Outlawz” feat. Jazmine Sullivan & 21 Savage

by Aidan C Werder on December 16, 2021

On Friday, the big boss himself, Rick Ross dropped his new album, ‘Richer Than I Ever Been’ and with it, the cinematic visual for the project’s instant-classic lead single “Outlawz” featuring the unlikely pair of Jazmine Sullivan and 21 Savage - which has already earned over 1.5M views, cracked the YouTube Trending charts, and hit the Jimmy Fallon stage all in under a week.

Outlawz” opens with a powerful hook by the stunning, iconic vocals of Jazmine Sullivan, showing off her insane range while appropriately posted up inside the two-tone Maybach. The hook gives way to big, dramatic, classic MMG production (produced by a dream team of araabMUZIK, Infamous, and Carnage) defined by its crescendo melodies, crunchy symbol-heavy drums, subtle horn section, and climactic chorus-sample that perfectly set the stage for Rozay’s legendary flow. As if that wasn’t enough, enter 21 Savage to give us a third flavor to the multilayered masterpiece - contrasting Jazmine’s soulful hook and Ross’ timeless flow with his own iconic, monotone delivery that somehow always seems to land just right.

The video for “Outlawz”, shot in New York, clearly seems to be channeling the vibe and aesthetic of those early 20-teen MMG glory days - from the transparent overlays of the artists’ faces over sweeping shots of the city scape, to the throne chairs in front of the white background, and even the soulful female R&B hook by the look-serving Jazmine Sullivan - all evoking strong 2010 vibes. While he plays the backseat as he cruises through NYC, Rozay makes sure to draw a line between the money that most rappers make, and the real generational wealth that he has been able to build - apparently having selected his baguette-only jewelry set to talk down on rappers who only ball when their album drops.

Overall, “Outlawz” is a hard-hitting, classic-feeling, multi-layered banger, and the perfect way to set off the highly publicized release of Rick Ross’ new album. Along with Jazmine Sullivan and 21, the new project has an insane feature list that includes Benny the Butcher, Future, Wiz Khalifa, Wale, Blxst, The-Dream, Yungeen Ace, Majornine, and even opens with a special message from the legendary Miami drug kingpin, Willie Falcon.
