On Friday, NYC’s quietly emerging superstar, Stunna Gambino dropped his newest single “Man Down” as he continues to separate himself from the pack as one of the top melodic rappers in the city - and easily one of the most promising emerging NYC acts of the last several years.
“Man Down” is an excellent introduction to the smooth, melodic rap sound of Stunna Gambino, whose gentle vocal, catchy flows, and carefully crafted bars have earned him the right to be listed alongside melodic NYC powerhouses like Lil Tjay, J.I., and the man himself, A Boogie - who fully co-signed Stunna earlier this year when he hopped on the remix of his viral breakout sound, “Demons” earlier this year.
In the video for “Man Down” (shot by JMO Productions), we see Stunna in a variety of expensive settings in what looks like the Hollywood hills - from the backyard basketball court, to the studio, to the driveway surrounded by foreign whips - while he rocks the Chrome Hearts Matty Boy “Sex Records” hoodie only seen on certain special individuals. The video also shows quick but notable cameos from some of the best A&Rs in the game in Fat Ricky and Lil Bibby.
In addition to his outsized talent and obvious star power, Stunna’s carefully curated, highly polished image defined by luxury goods and high-end real estate (as his name suggests) is made all the more compelling by his striking looks and babyface aesthetic - always guaranteed to get a reaction on first impression. Throughout 2020 - while the majority of NYC’s focus was on drill music - Stunna Gambino’s gentle melodic style quietly racked up millions of views with big hit songs like “Heartless”, “Rockstar From the Trenches” feat. Bizzy Banks, and “Top Opp Vulture” that earned him a spot amongst the top new artists in the city. At this time last year, Stunna dropped what would become his biggest song yet, “Demons” - a hugely catchy, hit song that’s earned over 11.2M YouTube views, nearly 5M Spotify streams, and even ended up on the radar of the queen herself, Rihanna. This summer, in addition to the “Demons” remix with A Boogie - Stunna also appeared on one of the standout tracks of The Kid Laroi’s #1 Album ‘F*ck Love 3’ alongside Polo G on “NOT SOBER”; a certified smash with nearly 90M Spotify streams and 14M views on YouTube.
It’s also worth noting that Stunna has been dabbling in the social media / influencer world - collaborating with popular YouTubers like Kai Cenat and even building up his girlfriend’s growing YouTube channel, TheRealChanelly. While it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it’s forward-thinking moves like these that will turn Stunna Gambino into a household name.
Overall, Stunna Gambino is an exciting talent out of Washington Heights, NY with a sound, look, and extremely broad appeal that makes him stand out from the crowd - with top tier backing in Fat Ricky to ensure that whenever he is ready to finally drop a project, it makes the splash his talent deserves.
