YS “Hate Me” feat. Babyface Ray & Fenix Flexin

by Aidan C Werder on August 30, 2021

The West Coast meets Michigan on the new single “Hate Me” feat. Babyface Ray & Fenix Flexin from the rising star out of Compton, YS.

YS’ new single, “Hate Me” prominently features the 20 year-old Compton native’s catchy melodic flow and unmistakable Cali swag. Built on a hard-hitting, classic west coast beat (produced by helluva), YS sets the tone with a super catchy hook - acknowledging and promptly dismissing any hate that comes his way. Giving way to the rising star out of Detroit, Babyface Ray - whose unorthodox, Michigan flow always seems to land in the right place, perfectly riding the west coast beat in a pocket only he could find. Followed by an impressive middle verse from YS, West Coast legend Fenix Flexin - most known for his role in the iconic Shoreline Mafia - enters the chat sporting his signature, laid back flow to close out.

The Wyatt Winfrey-directed music video shows YS in the studio alongside Fenix Flexin - sporting his signature braids, gold fronts, a red ski mask, and inexplicably rocking what appears to be a neck brace on-and-off in various scenes (hope everything is okay!). Babyface Ray seems to have shot his scene separately, as usual flexing his expensive outfit and an impressive stack of cash - his lips and facial expression barely moving as he delivers his famously understated bars.

YS is a 20 year-old first generation Compton native from the Campanella Park neighborhood. More specifically, YS is from Stanford Ave - made perfectly clear by his breakout hit “Welcome to Stanford” which released and caught fire in 2017 while he was locked up on juvenile charges at only 16 years old. Once on the other side of his legal troubles, YS recommitted to the music and made a big splash in 2019 with the local anthem “Bompton” - later that year turned into a remix featuring 1TakeJay and OHGEESY. The “Bompton” Remix is YS’ biggest song to date, premiering on WorldStarHipHop with over 6M views, and racking up over 3M Spotify streams to date.

YS kept his foot on the gas in 2020 with two projects. In April, he dropped ‘Street Icons’ produced by platinum producer RONRONTHEPRODUCER - which featured tracks like “Mobsters” feat. Sada Baby and “Think It’s A Game” featuring fellow Cali-natives Rucci and Big Sad. In December, he dropped ‘Cold Hearted’ - which sported features from WESTSIDE BOOGIE and Sada Baby, and included the fan favorite “Shot Caller” feat. Guapdad 4000. In 2021, YS shows no signs of slowing down - dropping a series of well-received singles including “Bompton 2 Beecher” feat. Krispylife Kidd, “Boomerang” feat. Snap Dogg, “Everday” - and now “Hate Me”, easily one of his strongest tracks to date.

YS is a young, hungry artist representing a new generation of west coast rappers - whose willingness to embrace fresh news sounds while remaining true to his Compton roots is already serving him well. Check out “Hate Me” feat. Babyface Ray & Fenix Flexin below.
